James Ward-Prowse does not feel Southampton 'played particularly badly' despite their heavy home defeat to Newcastle United. The Magpies carried over their near-perfect form from October to register a 4-1 victory at St Mary's on Sunday.
Goals from Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock and Chris Wood made it six wins from the last seven for Eddie Howe's side. However, the Newcastle head coach and Kieran Trippier admitted the visitors were not at their best despite the emphatic scoreline.
The Saints now sit in the relegation zone, but enjoyed the majority of possession against United, and had 16 shots with Romain Perraud netting a late consolation. Ward-Prowse does not feel the hosts did enough to claim all three points, and accepts they were punished by a clinical showing from Newcastle.

He told HampshireLive: “I think it will be funny to say, but I didn’t feel like it was a 4-1 game. I didn’t feel we played particularly badly, but equally I don’t think we did enough to win the game.
“Ultimately, in the second half they’ve had three or four chances and put the majority of them away and we know in the Premier League, the clinical nature of it, that in both boxes, if you don’t take your chances there’s always that threat that the other team will in our box and that was the case today."
