'Worried sick' family of Renfrew missing in Lanzarote plead for help as thousands raised to find him

A fundraiser has been launched to help with the search for a man from Renfrewshire who has gone missing in Lanzarote.

Gary Watson Shearer disappeared the same day he checked into his hotel in the resort town of Puerto del Carmen on March 16.

The 53-year-old fom Renfrew had flown over to the holiday destination to celebrate St Patrick's Day but hasn't been seen or heard from since leaving a pub on the night he arrived. Gary failed to show up for his flight home and was found to have not slept in his hotel room, where his belongings were discovered.

Gary's parents Ann, 71, and Danny, 69, along with his sister Michelle, flew out to Lanzarote to help with searches but were left 'disappointed' by the lack of action by Spanish police.

A fundraiser has been launched on behalf of the family to allow them to keep searched for the dad-of-one who has epilepsy and type-2 diabetes.

So far, £700 has been raised to help assist the family.

The fundraiser explains: "The funds raised from this page will be going to the family of Gary Watson Shearer to aid in their search for him. Gary was last seen at Bar 67 in Lanzarote on the 16th March 2023.

"Gary (Winker) is a well-known Renfrew man, son, father, cousin, and friend. Gary’s passport, clothes, money and medication were left in his hotel room, his bed unslept in. Gary has epilepsy and type 2 diabetes. The family are worried sick and at the moment his mum, dad and sister michelle are in Lanzarote searching for him."

Gary's sister Nikki previously confirmed that there had been no further trace of him after he left the pub.

She said: "There have been no further sightings of him anywhere. We're going out of our minds with worry. We're trying to stay positive, but the more days pass, the harder it is. We just want him home.

"My parents have been police officers searching the sea and flying over it in the helicopter but they have been left to their own devices to look for him.

"We're really disappointed that the police don't seem to be doing more.

"They haven't even organised a family liaison officer to support my parents and to be honest they need support. They are both really struggling. Gary was so close to them. They're devastated."

Gary was last seen wearing a green and white Celtic football top, white shorts and white trainers. He is described as being just over 5ft 2 with grey/black hair and a slight limp.

A spokesperson for the force on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria said: “We are seeking the public’s help in discovering the whereabouts of 53-year-old Gary James Watson. We urge anyone with any piece of information they think could be of interest to us and may help us find Gary to contact us.”

Donations can be made to the fundraiser here.
