Full Newcastle United international round-up so far as Bruno Guimaraes shines while others struggle

Several Newcastle United players have been in international action over recent days with the busy schedule now in full swing. With the UEFA Nations League underway, some countries face as many as four fixtures in the first two weeks of June to cap off a busy season at both club and country level.

It’s fair to say it has been a mixed bag of results for the Magpies currently away on international duty, with some enjoying considerably more success than others so far. Here is a full round-up of all the news so far involving Newcastle players:

Kieran Trippier – England

Kieran Trippier was an unused substitute as England were beaten 1-0 away at Hungary on Saturday. The Three Lions are next in action at Germany on Tuesday and given their shortage of left backs, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Trippier fill in there, as he has done before.

Fabian Schar – Switzerland

It’s not been a great international window for Fabian Schar so far, first playing 90 minutes of the 2-1 defeat at Czech Republic on Thursday. Then it got even worse for Schar on Sunday as he again played the full of match of a 4-0 defeat to Portugal. He was also booked in both games.

Emil Krafth – Sweden

Emil Krafth kicked off the international period with a 2-0 win over Slovenia on Thursday, where he was booked during his 24-minute cameo from the bench. Krafth then played the full match of Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat against Norway, where he was again shown a yellow card.

Bruno Guimaraes – Brazil

Bruno Guimaraes continued his fine form in a Brazil shirt as he registered yet another assist late on in a 5-1 win over South Korea, despite playing just 10 minutes.

Miguel Almiron – Paraguay

Miguel Almiron captained his country for the first team in his international career but could not stop Paraguay from being on the end of a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Japan.

Chris Wood – New Zealand

Chris Wood played 70 minutes of New Zealand’s 1-0 defeat to Peru in Barcelona as preparations continue for their huge World Cup play-off final game with Costa Rica on June 14.

Jeff Hendrick – Republic of Ireland

It was another disappointing night for Jeff Hendrick and the Republic of Ireland on Saturday as he played the full 90 minutes of their 1-0 defeat to Armenia.

Santiago Munoz – Mexico U21

Santiago Munoz is currently competing in the Tournoi Maurice Revello – a tournament that features invited national teams composed of youth players between U17 and U23. Mexico have won two of their three group matches, beating Indonesia and Ghana, before being beaten by Venezuela.

Munoz scored in the group opener from the penalty spot. Whether Mexico qualify for the knockout stages though will be determined by the final set of matches in Group C.

Elliot Anderson – Scotland U21

In their penultimate Euro U21 qualifying match, Scotland held Group I winners Belgium to a 0-0 draw. Anderson will conclude the trip with a trip to Denmark, though Scotland's U21s are already out of contention for qualification.
