Full Newcastle United international round-up as injury crisis deepens

The international break has added to Newcastle United's injury woes as Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood and Alexander Isak all returned from international duty with injuries.

Guimaraes picked up a thigh injury in training last week and was an unused substitute in Brazil's 3-0 win over Ghana on Friday. He wanted to stay for the second of their international friendlies against Tunisia but returned to Newcastle as he aims to recover for Saturday's trip to Fulham.

Isak won't be available for this weekend after sustaining a leg injury in training for Sweden. He was forced to withdraw from the squad and missed their Nations League fixtures against Serbia and Slovenia respectively. Wood was taken off in the 31st minute of New Zealand's 2-0 defeat against Australia on Sunday with a rib injury.

Elliot Anderson was also forced to pull out of the Scotland U21 squad due to a hamstring injury that kept him out of the Bournemouth draw. He is a doubt for their visit to Craven Cottage in what has been a very busy two weeks for the Newcastle medical team.

On a more optimistic note, Jamal Lewis started both internationals for Northern Ireland, while Ryan Fraser marked his return to the Scotland set-up in style.

Here is a round-up of how every Newcastle player got on during the latest round of international fixtures.

Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier (England)

Gareth Southgate opted for Pope over Aaron Ramsdale as England's first-choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was absent due to injury. The Newcastle keeper conceded from Giacomo Raspadori's incredible 68th minute strike as Italy condemned England to relegation in the UEFA Nations League at the San Siro.

He retained his place between the sticks against Germany but made a glaring mistake as he parried Serge Gnabry's long-range strike for Kai Havertz to equalise in the 87th minute. England had trailed 2-0 until Luke Shaw's equaliser ended the Three Lions' run of 565 minutes without a goal in open play.

Mason Mount levelled proceedings before Harry Kane fired England into the lead from the spot. Trippier was named on the bench in both games against Italy and Germany respectively but didn't feature for the Three Lions.

Fabian Schar (Switzerland)

Schar was left on the bench as Switzerland boss Murat Yakin opted for a defensive pairing of Nico Elvedi and Manuel Akanji for their trip to Spain. Switzerland prevailed 2-1 against Luis Enrique's charges as Spain suffered their first home defeat in over four years.

The 30-year-old was restored to the heart of defence alongside Elvedi for their final UEFA Nations League game. Switzerland registered a third straight victory by beating Czech Republic 2-1 in St Gallen to preserve their place in League A.

Ryan Fraser (Scotland)

Fraser featured for Scotland for the first time in 13 months after controversially pulling out of Steve Clarke's squad to face Moldova and Denmark respectively last November. He was introduced in the 76th minute and registered two assists with a pair of corners which were converted by the head of Lyndon Dykes in Scotland's 3-0 win over Ukraine.

He played over half an hour in Scotland's 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland and started Tuesday's goalless draw against Ukraine as Scotland earned promotion to the UEFA Nations League A.

Miguel Almiron (Paraguay)

Almiron played 90 minutes in each of Paraguay's two friendlies during the international break. Paraguay won 1-0 against United Arab Emirates in Austria courtesy of a goal from ex-West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena, before registering a goalless stalemate with Morocco in Seville.

Jamal Lewis (Northern Ireland)

Lewis will be hoping to put his injury problems behind him after returning to the fold for Northern Ireland. The 24-year-old won his first cap since last November as the Green and White Army ended a run of five internationals without a win by beating Kosovo 2-1 at Windsor Park.

He played in back-to-back games for club or country for the first time since December as Northern Ireland avoided relegation to League D, despite suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Greece in Athens.

Chris Wood (New Zealand)

New Zealand lost both games in a double bill against Australia. Wood was withdrawn in the 71st minute of the All Whites' 1-0 defeat in Brisbane and hobbled off just after the half hour mark with injury in the second game as Australia won 2-0 in Auckland three days later.
