Chelsea FC has reacted after the UK Government imposed asset-freezing sanctions on owner Roman Abramovich. The Russian has owned Chelsea since 2003 but put the club up for sale on March 2 in the wake of Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement issued on Thursday lunchtime, Chelsea FC said it has been advised that owner Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK Government. He was one of seven oligarchs hit by sanctions.
The statement said: "By virtue of his 100 per cent ownership of Chelsea FC plc and affiliated entities, Chelsea FC would normally be subject to the same sanctions regime as Mr Abramovich. However, the UK Government has issued a general licence that permits Chelsea FC to continue certain activities.
