Fulham make spiky Newcastle referee claim as Marco Silva rages at VAR after Dan Burn escapes

Fulham boss Marco Silva has fumed at how 'almost all' of referee Robert Jones' decisions were in favour of Newcastle United following his side's 1-0 defeat.

Fulham were, of course, awarded a spot-kick by VAR in the 69th minute after Bobby Decordova-Reid was felled by Kieran Trippier inside the area at St James' Park on Sunday. However, Silva felt the visitors should have been given a penalty seconds earlier when Dan Burn pulled Andreas Pereira back. Fulham, ultimately, had to make do with only the second decision going their way, but Aleksandar Mitrovic then had his converted penalty disallowed after the former Newcastle striker accidentally kicked the ball onto his standing foot after he slipped.

Newcastle went on to win the game when Alexander Isak scored a header in the 89th minute to send the Magpies back up to third in the table. Silva, though, felt the match would have been 'completely different' if that first penalty was awarded and Burn was sent off, and the Fulham boss was shown a yellow card after the game for making his point to Jones on the pitch.

"Two clear decisions inside the box at that moment and it's difficult to understand how the referee didn't see at least one," he told reporters after the game. "I think it's abnormal not to see two moments inside the box in 30 seconds.

"For us, the decisions were almost always against us. It can happen. I can have a bad afternoon. The referee can not perform in the best way and, clearly, he didn't perform this afternoon at his best level.

"More difficult for us to understand is how the VAR can't see the first penalty because that moment has to be the first penalty and a red card for the player. When Andreas was going to finish the moment, the player pulled Andreas and it's a clear penalty and red card. It made a huge impact on the game."
