Petrol theft has reached record levels as fuel prices continue to soar at the forecourt.
So-called drive-off incidents - where motorists fill up then drive off without making any attempt to pay for the fuel - have increased by 61% so far this year, according to the Petrol Retailers' Association executive director Gordon Balmer, who said that retailers will lose £25 million if the current rate of drive-offs continues for the next 12 months,
There has also been an increase in the number of drivers claiming to be unable to pay for fuel they have already put in their vehicle - such as by forgetting their wallet. The annual cost to the sector has been put at £16 million, according to WalesOnline
