Frustration over individuals with 'no respect' as anti-social behaviour rises in Radford

Residents living in an area of Nottingham which recorded a significant rise in anti-social behaviour say some individuals have 'no respect' for where they live.

Radford reported a 38% jump in anti-social behaviour ASB from 2019/20 into 2020/21, according to data from Nottingham City Council.

This is the highest jump seen across the city, with incidents dropping as much as 25% in other areas of Nottingham.

There were 1,487 incidents recorded between September 2020 and August 2021, the third most in Nottingham overall behind the city centre and nearby Hyson Green and the Arboretum.

People living in Radford identified one of the biggest problems as litter, but also mentioned drugs and speeding as issues in the area.

Mo Rafique, 43, who works in sales, says the minority ruin it for the rest of the people who live in Radford.

He said: "Most people who live here are lovely, but some do make problems.

"They hang around, they smoke drugs - it's intimidating. My wife doesn't like walking around on her own at night - I don't either.

"I'd say the other big problem is rubbish. It's everywhere and it smells."

Meanwhile 33-year-old Stacey Beale told Nottinghamshire Live: "It doesn't surprise me.

"I think people are just bored.

"There's always going to be problems, but I don't think this area is particularly bad."

One father-of-four, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "There are a lot of problems here.

"The main ones for me are speeding and the amount of rubbish you see everywhere.

"I have four children and I am always afraid that they might run into the road and get hit by a car that is going too fast. It's dangerous.

"With the litter, it's the same year after year - nothing gets done about it. Some people have absolutely no respect for the area and it is sad.

"Hopefully things improve, but I'm not sure they will."

One shopkeeper, who didn't want to be named, told Nottinghamshire Live he feels Radford does have its problems.

"I wouldn't say this is a nice area personally," he said.

"People hang around and cause problems for the sake of it - for no reason.

"We're quite lucky, though, because most of the people that come in are very nice. But some are always out on the streets, late at night, I think it puts people off coming into the shop when they're near here."

The data, released by Nottingham City Council, showed the areas in Nottingham with the highest and lowest amount of ASB incidents.

An increase in recorded incidents has been put down to the coronavirus pandemic which has resulted in "complex and challenging social situations".
