From Stotties to Shearer: The ten best things to come out of Newcastle according to locals

Stottie cake, Newcastle Brown Ale, and Sting have topped the list of the best things ever to come out of the Toon - according to local residents.

The claims come from the results of a recent study conducted by Santander UK, in which the banking institution asked 100 locals what reminds them of their beloved city.

And when the results were in, Geordies came up with a litany of homegrown talents and products which have put the city on the Tyne on the map, over the past decades.

Iconic footballers Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer also featured on the list when the dust had settled, known well for their promising careers with Newcastle United Football Club and England alike.

And the Toon Army also received an honorary mention, no doubt one of the most faithful and proud fan-bases around the globe, following their club home and away around the country.

Chris Donald's magazine Viz also received acclaim, landing itself respectively within the top ten. Created from Donald's parents' bedroom in Jesmond, the satirical monthly feature has since became a comical staple across the UK.

Gordon Sumner aka Sting also got a frequent mention from locals across the area, known best for his band The Police, in the late 70s / Early 80s.

A Wallsend lad, Sting is also globally recognised for his human rights activism and charity work, participating in worldwide fundraisers such as Band Aid, Human Rights Now, and Music for Montserrat.

Newcastle's RNLI was also mentioned by some locals, due to their hard work with regards to coastline and sea-based emergencies since their formation in 1825 - earning crew members thirty medals for gallantry.

Lucozade and windscreen wipers also came up from those in the know, for their historic ties with the Toon. Both are products created by entrepreneurs of Newcastle - with Captain Gladstone Adams claiming to have invented wipers, and pharmacist William Walker Hunter creating Lucozade (then Glucozade) as an energy drink for the sick in 1927.
