Sir Sadiq Khan is to be made a peer along with 25 other new members of the House of Lords as Sir Keir Starmer prepares to leave office.
The Labour London Mayor will take his seat on the red benches with former cabinet secretary Sir Chris Wormald and Sir Brian Leveson, a retired senior judge.
They appeared on a list of names issued by Downing Street to which No 10 said the King has been “graciously pleased to signify his intention of conferring peerages”.
Confirming Sir Sadiq’s nomination, a government source said: “Sadiq has been a brilliant mayor who has transformed London for the better, so this is thoroughly deserved.
“He has cut violent crime to record lows, cleaned up the capital’s air, delivered the Elizabeth Line and got London building council homes again.”
Others to have been elevated to the House of Lords in the prime minister’s resignation honours include the television presenter June Sarpong, and Christina McAnea, the former general secretary of the Unison union, which is one of Labour’s largest donors.
It is a well-established tradition for outgoing prime ministers to hand peerages and other gongs to key allies after they leave office.
But it’s understood this list was in the works before Sir Keir’s decision to stand down as prime minister, which followed Mr Burnham’s announcement that he intended to challenge Sir Keir for the Labour leadership.
In 2023, Sir Keir said he would not submit a traditional resignation honours list when his time as prime minister ended, following controversies over the lists presented by Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.
At the time, he said: “Tony Blair didn’t have a resignation list. It’s very hard to justify. There are other avenues for that, and I think it’s easier to be clean about this and simply say, no, I wouldn’t do it.”
