
When Mo, a long-haul truck driver from Iran, arrived in the South Yorkshire town of Barnsley with his wife and two children five years ago, everything felt alien. The family were moved between hotels in London and Bradford before being placed in Barnsley — a town they knew nothing about.
“I left for “religious reasons”, Mo, 55, explains. “I left because I do not believe in Islam, but that is not something you can say in my home country.” In Iran, apostasy and converting to Christianity can carry the death penalty.
