'From Canny Farm to LA' - Liverpool band Space celebrate 30 years

It's been three decades since Brit pop band Space first formed in Liverpool and were in their infancy.

Initially made up of three members, the band got their big break and rose to fame in the early 90s with singles like Female of the Species and Neighbourhood, before going on to tour the globe. After signing to Gut Records in 1995, Space found themselves performing on massive shows like Top of the Pops and TFI Friday - and rubbing shoulders with other big names in the music and entertainment industry.

Decades down the line and six albums in, the band are currently on a UK anniversary tour to mark 25 years since the release of the Spiders and Tin Planet albums. On tour are original members Tommy Scott, Jamie Murphy, Franny Griffiths and Phil Hartley and Allan Jones who joined Space when they reformed.

Concluding their tour in Liverpool on April 1, lead singer and guitarist Tommy Scott told the ECHO: "It's crazy, I cant believe it was that long ago. We were like a little three piece doing our thing, with a 60s sound like most Liverpool bands.

"I'd been in bands before but none of them had ever done anything, they'd all had their promise and people seemed to like them but they never got signed. There were so many bands in Liverpool that should have made it and never did and I felt like one of them. But then we got the break.

It was just amazing, we couldn't believe it. We ended up going to Japan, America, Europe, everything. Before that the furthest palace id been in my life was Llandudno in a caravan.

"Next minute I'm all over the world. I was amazing to meet famous people and do Top of the Pops loads of times, all the kids shows, TFI - it was amazing."

Tommy said some of his stand out moments has been meeting Mike Myers to working with Tom Jones and performing at the Hillsborough Justice Concert in 1997. Tommy said: "We went into Mike Myers' house, he invited us round to his house in LA, Beverly Hills, four Scousers.

"It was mad. He showed us all the other famous people's houses and he had a jam with us. Also meeting Tom Jones and getting to record with him.

"And a stand out memory of mine was playing there at Anfield the Hillsborough concert. The Manic Street Preachers, The Stereophonics, us, there were loads of fantastic bands who all pulled together."

In the band, Tommy and Jamie hail from Cantril Farm, with Franny and the late Andy Parle were from Breck Road. Tommy said he's seen the industry change through the years and that their younger selves would think their journey was "a rollercoaster - from Canny Farm to LA."

Tommy said: "I remember our manager getting his first phone - it was the size of a shoebox or something. Everyone was begging him to use it.

"There was nothing like we have now back then. It's a selfie world now and I always make sure after gigs I go and see the crowd and get pictures with people and stuff like that.

"We look at the audience and there's like 17 year old kids and 20 year olds and up to 30s and it's their mums and dads who got them all into us. Our audience look a lot younger than us.

"Its good because we can keep going and get new fans all the time. They are absolutely amazing and they keep us going."

Space are playing the 02 Academy in Liverpool on April 1, which will see them perform albums Spiders and tin Planet, including hits Female of The Species, Neighbourhood, Avenging Angels, The Ballad of Tom Jones and Me and You vs The World to name a few.

Both albums have also been re-released on coloured Vinyl on BBC/Demon Records and 45 more dates have been added which will be released on April 2, also seeing the band perform songs from their new album. Tommy said: "For the albums Spiders and Tin Planet, we went to country manors and things like that to record, places we've never been, even though we ended up recording both albums in Liverpool.

"It was just great. I think Mister Psycho was always my favourite because it was a bit more edgy and less poppy than the other stuff. The band - I love the banter, the craic.

"We've had some good times, we’ve had some bad tomes, we’ve lost people who've passed away in the band. But the core of the band we’ve all stuck together, we’re all good mates, we all have a laugh."
