Drinkers are spoilt for choice at the Horse and Jockey - a "proper" pub where it's all about the beer and chat. There are no fruit machines and no pool table, just a smattering of background music so conversations aren't overheard, a weekly quiz and screens showing rugby and, more recently, football, with the introduction of Sky TV.
The biggest draw is the 13 ever-changing real ales, which have once again led to the Stapleford drinking hole being crowned Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in the Nottingham category. The pub, in Nottingham Road, prides itself on its well-kept, hand-pulled beers, which usually include one stout, porter or mild.
Five of the beers are classed as 'LocAle' meaning they're brewed within 20 miles of the boozer. Among them is the Full Mash Brewery that's less than half-a-mile away and brews the Jockey's best-selling house beer. Paul Guilford, manager of the freehouse, said: "It's brewed only for us We sell nine gallons of that in a fortnight. It's the one beer that's always on."
