Fresh SEPA flood alert issued for Ayrshire and Arran

A FRESH flooding alert has been issued across Ayrshire and Arran for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency says heavy rain could bring some localised flooding in the region.

A spokesperson said: "Locally heavy rain is likely to affect the area during Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

"There is a risk of flooding from rivers and surface water. Potential impacts include localised flooding of properties, low lying land and roads. Localised disruption to travel is possible.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property.

"Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188. If you haven't already signed up to receive free flood messages, please call Floodline or register online at sepa.org.uk/floodingsignup."

The warning come as severe gales caused power cuts across the island of Ireland, with around 100,000 homes and businesses left without electricity.

An Irish postwoman in County Limerick was hit by flying debris but not badly hurt, her employers said.

British Airways said that, like other airlines, it had to “make a small number of cancellations” due to the bad weather, which has reduced the number of flights air traffic controllers will allow to land per hour.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve apologised to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans and our teams are working hard to get them on their way as quickly as possible.”

Gusts of 77mph were recorded in Gwynedd, 74mph at Killowen in Northern Ireland and 68mph on the Isle of Man as the low pressure system moved across the Irish Sea.
