Adults who often feel sleepy during the day or have trouble sleeping were more likely to have fatty liver disease, according to research presented at the American College of Gastroenterology's 2026 meeting in Nashville. How long people slept did not show the same independent link once other health factors were accounted for.
The finding does not mean poor sleep causes liver disease. It does give patients a practical reason to mention ongoing sleep problems at their next checkup, especially if they already have risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
