Frenkie de Jong responds to Manchester United transfer interest

Frenkie de Jong admits he is well aware of Manchester United's interest in signing him this summer, but he has refused to state whether or not he has spoken to Erik ten Hag about such a move.

United are weighing up a potential £75million move for Barcelona midfielder De Jong after new manager Ten Hag identified the 25-year-old as an ideal target. Ten Hag worked with the Barcelona midfielder at Ajax and the Manchester Evening News understands United have contacted Barcelona about De Jong's potential availability.

The Dutch international is contracted to Barcelona until 2026, having joined the club from Ajax for £65m in 2019, but the emergence of Pedri and Gavi in midfield has plunged his future into doubt. The Catalan club have also experienced financial problems, and De Jong's sale could be needed to help fund new signings.

De Jong is away on international duty with the Netherlands, where he has been asked all about the speculation regarding his Barcelona future.

"Of course I hear about the links to Manchester United," he told ADSportwereld. "But the people in charge of the club (Barça) didn't tell me anything. So then I will assume that there is no agreement, and that nothing is going on. So then I won't worry about it too.

"If I have been in contact with Ten Hag? I won't tell you this. I wouldn't tell you this if it was about another manager or club too. I did talk with Xavi about next season, but that was just about football, about the squad and what is needed to improve."

While the Dutch midfielder insists he is happy at Barcelona, there can be no ignoring the financial situation of the club and their need to sell players this summer.

When asked if he could be one of those sold in the coming months, De Jong added: "I understand that. But the club didn't tell me anything. They didn't propose anything to me, so I am assuming that nothing is going on.

"I have never felt regret regarding choosing Barcelona, definitely not. Barcelona is the club of my dreams and has been since I was a kid."
