French Open: Zverev downs teen sensation Alcaraz in brutal four-setter

PARIS: Alexander Zverev knows a thing or two about teenage sensations, having been one himself not so long ago. The 25-year-old German, seeded three, stood firm against the blast from the future - Spain's Carlos Alcaraz to score a 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7) win in the quarterfinals of the French Open.

Alcaraz, who entered Roland Garros on a 14-match winning streak and is an ATP Tour-best at 8-2 against top-10s this season, however gave Zverev his first career top-10 win in a Grand Slam tournament which stood at 0-11 coming into the last-eight clash.

"I hope I can win it before he starts beating us all and we have no chance," said Zverev.

"The match was swinging his way. I'm extremely happy to win the tiebreak."

It was Zverev's first win over a player ranked in the top-10 in a best-of-five match in a Slam.
