French Alps awarded 2030 Winter Olympics by IOC 'under conditions'

The French Alps have been selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the Winter Games in 2030, contingent upon France providing financial assurances.

The decision was made on Wednesday, following President Emmanuel Macron's pledge to the IOC members that he would request the incoming Prime Minister to offer a monetary "guarantee" for staging the event.

France stands as the sole contender to host the Games, but uncertainties surrounding the funding have arisen due to the absence of a government following indecisive snap elections.

However, during his address to the IOC members in Paris, Macron assured them that he would call upon the Prime Minister, who will emerge from the ongoing negotiations to establish a new government, to make a "financial commitment" and enact an Olympic law.

"I want to confirm my full commitment and the full commitment of the French nation," said Macron, ahead of the Paris Olympics beginning July 26.

"I assure you I will ask the next Prime Minister to include not only this guarantee but also an Olympic law in the priorities of the new government."

President Macron expressed France desires to demonstrate to "the rest of the world that the Winter Games are not just history -- and we are proud to be part of it -- but part of our future."
