Horror movies have become a major source of inspiration for video games. Franchises such as "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" have already received their own games.
But some fans still wonder about another iconic horror villain: Freddy Krueger. The fictional character hasn't gotten any game so far.
According to Illfonic, bringing "A Nightmare on Elm Street" into gaming would be far more complicated than simply putting Freddy into a multiplayer horror title.
Freddy Krueger's Kills Create a Major Challenge
Illfonic already has experience developing asymmetrical horror games. According to GameSpot, chief creative officer Jared Gerritzen explained that the studio does not automatically pursue every popular horror franchise.
Freddy Krueger is one example of a particularly difficult property.
The "A Nightmare on Elm Street" movies are known for their creative and often extreme death scenes. Those kills are a major part of Freddy's identity.
A video game would need to capture that same feeling.
The problem is that recreating hundreds of elaborate kills could require significant development time and money. The game would also need enough supporting mechanics to make those moments work within an interactive experience.
In short, that creates a difficult question for developers. The challenge lies in making a Freddy Krueger game feel authentic without becoming too expensive to produce.
Freddy's Dream World Could Become Repetitive
At first glance, Freddy's dream powers seem perfect for a video game.
He can manipulate reality, create strange environments, and attack victims in unpredictable ways. Those abilities could give developers plenty of creative freedom.
Replayability, however, could become a major issue.
A multiplayer horror game needs to remain entertaining across dozens or even hundreds of matches. Players need new situations to experience instead of seeing the same sequences repeatedly.
That is especially difficult with "A Nightmare on Elm Street."
Some of Freddy's most famous scenes work because they happen only once in the movies. Tina's death on the ceiling and Glen being pulled into his bed are memorable because they are unexpected and shocking.
Repeating similar sequences every match could make them lose their impact.
Freddy's personality creates another problem. He often plays with his victims before killing them. That slow, theatrical approach works well in a movie.
It is harder to translate into a fast-paced multiplayer game.
Illfonic Is Selective About Horror Franchises
Illfonic has learned plenty from working on horror games. The studio understands that a recognizable license does not automatically make a good video game.
The development process starts with a basic gameplay framework. From there, the team can determine which elements of a franchise actually work in an interactive format.
Some ideas may sound exciting on paper but fail when turned into repeatable gameplay.
That may be one reason Illfonic has not attempted every major horror property.
'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Could Have Another Problem
Gameplay is not necessarily the only obstacle facing a potential Freddy Krueger game.
The "A Nightmare on Elm Street" intellectual property has also been associated with complicated rights issues. Multiple parties may have interests connected to the franchise, which could make licensing more difficult for a game developer.
Gerritzen did not comment on those rights concerns.
For now, a Freddy Krueger video game remains possible. Illfonic could eventually find a gameplay concept that fits the character.
Another developer could also take on the challenge.
In the meantime, check some comments from fans about this discussion:
"A Freddy game would take a lot of creativity to get right. A story-based game like Silent Hill or Resident Evil would be fun, but please not another asymmetric multiplayer."
"The Craven Estate owns the rights to Elm St. and Robert Englund now owns the rights to his image. That's why nothing new with Robert's image (face) is on merch. WB still owns the remake title and Freddy image so any new Elm St merch will have the remake logo and remake Freddy image."
"If they made a game of this with modern consoles, I'd pre-order it. (And I don't like pre-ordering.) But sadly, i think the reason why Freddy doesn't get a proper game is down to licensing. The closest game we have to this is The Evil Within 2 and maybe Alien Isolation. Combine those two games and give it a NOES colour pallette, and I think you could be onto a real winner."
" I think that people WANT to make the game, but if you don't nail it 100%, nobody is going to want it. I've had ideas on a Freddy game for years. My thoughts were a cross between Bully, Catherine, and Friday the 13th."
