Fred Again and the case for the phoneless gig

A grand total of 10,250 people shuffled into Alexandra Palace last night for the penultimate show of Fred Again’s monumental, sold-out USB002 tour. On arrival, each person was given a little taste of Berlin: a sticker was placed over their back phone camera, and they were kindly reminded not to film the show.

It’s a practice that is becoming more and more commonplace around the London club scene, having originated from queer clubs in Europe where privacy is paramount and immersion is guaranteed. Regular attendees at clubs such as FOLD, Lost and Fabric will be all too familiar with cleaning the adhesive residue off their back camera the day after a big night out, as much of a mark of honour as the faded club stamp on their wrist.
