Greater Manchester has been lashed by a thunderstorm this afternoon — but experts are predicting it’ll be hotter than Monaco here tomorrow.
A yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office for this afternoon evening for much of the North, with meteorologists concerned there would be disruption to roads, rail, and electricity networks. The Met Office also warned flooding was a possibility, with the warning in place from 1pm to 10pm on Monday (May 16).
And some people were caught out in Oldham by the wet weather. One man in Uppermill told the Manchester Evening News : “It was a freak storm which battered the village for 30 minutes.

“Families were caught out and had to take cover under slides in the playground. It was bonkers!”
Oldham wasn’t the only borough to be affected — Rochdale was hit by the storms, which put a damper on the library’s plans to host a book treasure hunt in the borough’s parks this week. “The rain has stopped and is the perfect time to look for a book,” the council team tweeted at 1pm. “Our Rochdale Library staff will be hiding books in our parks all this week. We will be sharing hints to help you... happy hunting!”
Of course, most Mancunians are no strangers to puddles, wringing their socks out, or shaking off a brolly. However, people from other parts of the UK aren’t so lucky.
One of those was Amber, visiting from Lincoln. She tweeted: “Not Manchester welcoming me with pouring rain and lightning when I've just come from bright sunshine in Lincoln.”
Despite the splash-fest today, it looks like Tuesday will be a fine day in Greater Manchester — and hotter than Monaco. The Met Office is forecasting the mercury will hit 22C by late afternoon, comparable to Tenerife.
That’s 1C hotter than Monte Carlo, with the playground of the rich having a relatively dull day with clouds and sunny spells. The UK’s second city will also be a bit warmer than Portugal’s, with Porto only getting highs of 19C.
And, if Cristiano Ronaldo fancied a trip to his native homeland of Madeira, he’d be advised to take a jacket. That’s because the island is expecting rain and only 18C on Tuesday.
