'Fraud alert' issued to people with Santander, Natwest, Barclays and other banks

We all try to keep as safe as we can when it comes to our finances, but the fact is that fraud can happen to any of us. And a new study has outlined the top five banks in the UK whose customers are reportedly at most risk of it happening - with Santander at the top of the list.

Google search data was analysed by experts at VPN Overview, who looked for terms such as 'fraud number' and 'fraud helpline'. This data used to determine how many customers have searched for help with scams.

Liverpool Echo reports that Santander came out on top, with the highest number of search terms. NatWest and Barclays followed in second and third, respectively, followed by HSBC and Halifax. The Co-Operative bank had the lowest.

A spokesperson from VPN Overview commented on the findings as they said: "Currently, there are an abundance of phishing scams circling looking to steal bank details and other personal information. These will aim to trick you via texts, emails, and even phone calls.

"While the study reflects that customers of these particular banks are more likely to be a victim of fraud, it’s crucial for everyone to be wary of these dangerous scams – regardless of whether their bank is listed in the top five.

"To avoid falling victim to phishing scams, it’s essential to never click on unfamiliar links in emails or texts or to provide personal information on a phone call that you receive. If ever uncertain, you can always call your bank to find out if any text, call, or email you receive is genuine."

The Daily Record has contacted the banks for comment.

The study was conducted by VPNOverview.com, cybersecurity experts dedicated to helping internet users feel safer and protected online. However, the methodology used to collect this data has been challenged by UK Finance and is reportedly being updated.

A spokesperson from UK Finance said: "The methodology used by VPN Overview does not reflect actual fraud levels. We contacted VPN Overview and they have acknowledged the data in their press release is misleading and are updating it.

"The banking and finance industry’s focus is always on stopping fraud from happening in the first place and the sector invests billions in efforts to keep customers safe. The industry also undertakes a lot of activity to educate customers on how best to protect themselves from fraud, including through the Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign."
