‘Frankenstein Steps’ restoration begins in Dundee as contractors start work

Work has begun to restore Dundee’s historic ‘Frankenstein Steps’ back to their former glory.

The steps on the city’s Baffin Street are next to the cottage that horror author Mary Shelley lived as a young woman.

A plaque on the wall there marks its link to the legendary writer.

The cottage was also home to the famous Baxter family who were well known across the city.

Dundee City Council have appointed Kilmac as the contractor and the works they are expected to last for three weeks.

Councillor Lynne Short, Fairness Spokesperson and Maryfield Ward described it as an excellent example of a local authority investing in its street scene.

She said it is also engaging local firms that pay the real Living Wage and therefore being involved in community wealth building.

She told Dundee Live: “It’s great to see investment in this area of the ward and I’m delighted that the work is being carried out to such an historically interesting area.

“This is the Year of Stories so it is fitting that we are highlighting Dundee’s links to Mary Shelley in this way.

“As part of the Making Dundee a Living Wage City steering group it is always good to remind ourselves of organisations that have been accredited for many years, and to see that they have been successful in tender processes.”

Colin Clement chair of the Stobswell Forum said: “These steps are used frequently heading from to and from the District Shopping Area and eventually it is hoped we can work with the Eden Project to create Green Trails to connect down to the proposed Dock Street site.

"We have done some consultation work with the local community and hopefully this investment by the council will lead to bigger and better things."
