Frank Lampard speaks out on Mason Mount's Chelsea future amid Liverpool transfer interest

In an unlikely twist of the most unpredictable of seasons at Chelsea, former midfielder and head coach Frank Lampard has made a return to the club. The ex-England international was appointed as caretaker boss on Thursday afternoon for the remaining stint of the campaign.

It comes after the Blues decided to axe Graham Potter after a tough run of form, with the hunt for a next manager now underway. The new ownership will want to get this appointment right, so with that exhaustive and thorough process underway, giving the role to Lampard should give them more time.

"It's nice to be back," the 44-year-old said in his pre-Wolves press conference shortly after the announcement of his arrival. "Easy decision for me, this is my club. I'm also a very practical person. I've been on a different path since I left Chelsea but to come back when I've been asked and come back with a belief I can help until the end of the season."

One of the key questions upon Lampard's return was surrounding former favourite Mason Mount, who had played for Lampard on loan at Derby County before he switched to Stamford Bridge the year after. Things this season haven't been quite as smooth for the midfielder, with doubts over his future as his contract continues to dwindle.

football.london understands that the Reds are seriously interested in the England international and are preparing to make a move for the midfielder in the summer should the situation remain unsolved. Amid questions over his future, Lampard spoke out on his current dilemma.

"Mason has always been a fantastic player for me at Derby and Chelsea," Lampard said. "I know he's had a few slight injury problems. I need to speak to him and find out where he's at, but I know what I get from Mason. He's a huge player for Chelsea.

"Modern-day football has big squads and I understand Chelsea might be at the top end. I remember being here before and having that. Maybe in the short term, that's a positive thing for me because everyone can have a clean slate."

It remains to be seen whether Mount can turn his campaign around for a strong finish after the return of Lampard, however it could be the change he needs to reignite and recapture his best form.
