Frank Lampard facing Everton midfield conundrum as Nathan Patterson question emerges

Everton return to Premier League action on Saturday evening when they welcome Leicester City to Goodison Park.

The Blues return home following a goalless draw with Fulham last time out. While Everton comfortably won their last game at Goodison, beating Crystal Palace 3-0.

And with his squad now almost at full strength, Frank Lampard is set to face some significant selection dilemmas. And with that in mind, we have taken a look at the changes he could make to his starting line-up for Saturday’s game.

Jordan Pickford, who was man of the match against Fulham, will no doubt start in goal against Brendan Rodgers’ side, while Conor Coady, James Tarkowski and Vitaliy Mykolenko will also be given the nod to start at the back following their impressive displays at Craven Cottage.

However, at right-back, Blues boss Lampard has somewhat of a conundrum following the return of Nathan Patterson. The Scotland international returned to action against Marco Silva’s side at the weekend.

Patterson replaced Seamus Coleman just after the hour mark and will surely, with another week of training ahead of him, be pushing for a start against the Foxes. But it remains to be seen whether Lampard will want to throw the right-back straight back in.

After long being a problem position for the Blues, suddenly Lampard finds himself with an array of options in midfield. Another couple of summer signings, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye, along with the rejuvenated Alex Iwobi, currently find themselves as the incumbent trio in the centre of the park, but others are pushing to be included such as Abdoulaye Doucoure, Tom Davies, and the other summer recruit, James Garner.

Garner’s progress since his transfer deadline day move from Manchester United continues to be praised by Lampard and his backroom staff in interviews and the 21-year-old came off the bench again against Fulham and could well make his first start for the Blues this weekend as Lampard looks to freshen up his midfield.

On the wings, Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray were again given the nod at Craven Cottage. But unfortunately for Gordon, he endured another frustrating evening.

Unlike in recent seasons, Everton now have options at their disposal, and Dwight McNeil will no doubt be pushing hard for a recall. Up front there is finally a bit of competition, too, but one imagines that Dominic Calvert-Lewin, despite firing a blank against Fulham, will be given the nod to lead the line over Neal Maupay.
