Frank Lampard eyeing Chelsea raid for ‘next John Terry’ in summer transfer swoop

Former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard is eyeing a move for Blues’ youngster Levi Colwill this summer, according to reports. The ex-midfielder is currently in charge at Everton, managing to secure their Premier League status after a relegation threatened campaign.

However, that plan for the Toffees could depend on what Thomas Tuchel is looking to build during the transfer window. The German coach is already set to lose Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger as free transfers, leaving a gap in their backline.

On the summer plans, Tuchel said: “I don't know where we are from day one. What I can promise is that I will be here – if I can promise that – I will be here with full energy and positive energy no matter what. We will still work for Chelsea, and I refuse to think of negative scenarios. We will be competitive, on which level we will see.”

Those summer plans could dictate the fate of defender Colwill, who has enjoyed an outstanding season on loan at Huddersfield. Against all the odds, the 19-year-old has helped guide the Terriers to the Championship playoff final, with a return to the Premier League beckoning for the Yorkshire club.

In light of his performances, the Sun reports that Lampard is hoping to land Colwill on loan at Everton next season. The young defender has been named the ‘next John Terry’, with the former player knowing all about playing with the ex-teammate.

While those may be the hopes for the Everton boss, pre-season could change whether he will be available or not, as Tuchel confirmed. Speaking about his loan players, though more specifically Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher, the manager said: “First of all they will come back because they are our players.

“When we give them on loan we do this for them but also for us to have better players, more experienced players back. They are our players and I want to have them in pre-season and then we decide what’s going on.”

Given the manager’s previous track record of giving youth a chance, such as Trevoh Chalobah earlier this season, it is plausible that Colwill could play a part next season. However, that will be dependent on a number of factors to be decided before then.
