Everton’s early pre-season focus has been about creating a squad that is stronger and capable of playing with more intensity - both going forward and in defence.

Amid the injury chaos that blighted the end of the last campaign, Frank Lampard repeatedly expressed his desire to create a team that is more “robust”. That can be achieved, in part, by signings - with James Tarkowski representing the arrival of a centre back who has played more than 30 Premier League games in each of the past five seasons.

Significant attention is also being paid to strengthening the current players, first team coach Chris Jones told the ECHO. And in a fascinating overview of the club’s approach to the first weeks of pre-season he highlighted Dominic Calvert-Lewin as one of several players to have impressed.

'I should be' - Morgan Gibbs-White breaks silence on Wolves future amid Everton transfer links

Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has admitted he is determined to prove his worth at his current employers amid speculation surrounding his future at Molineux Stadium.

Everton are among the teams to have been linked with the 22-year-old and reportedly saw a £25million bid rejected by the West Midlands club, who are reluctant to offload their academy graduate. Anthony Gordon has played alongside Gibbs-White for England U21s, meanwhile the Blues' director of football Kevin Thelwell knows the youngster from his own time at Wolves when the player was rising through the ranks.

Gibbs-White caught the eye during a season-long loan spell at Championship side Sheffield United last campaign, reaching double figures for both goals and assists as the Blades made the play-off places. It remains to be seen as to whether or not Everton step up their interest in the Stafford-born star in the weeks ahead, though the player himself appears relaxed regarding the situation.
