Frank Lampard calls up Chelsea U14s captain to train alongside first-team stars

Frank Lampard called up Chelsea's Under-14s captain to train with the first-team ahead of the Blues' Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Teenage prospect Charlie Holland could be seen training alongside the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Holland recently captained Chelsea's Under-14s to victory in the Albert Phelan Cup South, with the Blues beating Fulham 5-0 in the final.

Interim boss Frank Lampard is a big advocate of bringing through young talent from the academy, most notably handing opportunities to the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham during his first stint as manager.

And while talented prospects from the academy regularly get chances to train with the senior team, it is usually afforded to Under-21s or Under-18s footballers making Holland's involvement a notable one.

Chelsea currently sit 11th in the Premier League table, having finally recorded their first win since Lampard returned last weekend as they beat Bournemouth 3-1. Reflecting on the victory after the match, Lampard said: "It was very evident from coming in that there was a lot of picking up that needed to be done and unfortunately you need results to go in line with that to keep stepping forward.

"That's been tough and the lads are all human. When you're not winning games, or if you don't feel like you're at your best, and the only way to get through that is to fight and to get through it.

"In this period, it will be the challenge on the players that will make them stronger or better as they go on. We don't want to take our foot off the pedal in terms of trying to take steps towards the end of the season because it's important.

"Today you saw individual performances in Badiashile, in Conor Gallagher, in Noni Madueke and other players in the team, so that's a big step forward because these are individuals who will be part of the team going forward probably. That's a good sign."

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is poised to take charge this summer and he will have a big job on his hands, with Chelsea missing out on European football and needing toe ensure they do not fall foul of the Premier League's Financial Fair Play rules after announcing losses of more than £120million over the last financial year.
