Frank Lampard aims blunt Everton penalty message at Mohamed Salah

Frank Lampard labelled Joel Matip's controversial challenge on Anthony Gordon a "clear foul" and suggested Liverpool would have received a penalty had it been on one of their players.

Gordon went down following contact with Matip in the second half and with the scores still level. The Professional Game Match Officials Board, the body responsible for match officials in English football, has reportedly said there would have been "no complaints" from them had a penalty been awarded.

Clearly frustrated by the decision, Lampard said: "It is a penalty in the second half. I don’t think you get them here. I think probably if that is Mo Salah at the other end, you get a penalty.

"And I'm not trying to create conflict there, I think it is just the reality of football sometimes... For me, for sure, that was a penalty the second one on Anthony. It was a foul, it was a clear foul. But you don't get them here."

The incident came during the opening minutes of a second half in which Everton offered a genuine threat to Liverpool, Gordon repeatedly breaking down the Blues' left. The timing was crucial, with Liverpool taking the lead through Andrew Robertson a short time later.

Asked whether he would attempt to speak to referee Stuart Attwell about the decision, Lampard said he had not, adding: "I think they are open to that now but it's gone and it's a disappointment because I think in the cold light of day, in a fair fight, it's a penalty."
