NEW DELHI: Kylian Mbappe scored two stunning goals after Olivier Giroud's record breaking opening strike as the defending champions France stormed into the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday. France defeated Poland 3-1 in their Round of 16 match at Al Thumama stadium to keep their chance for back-to-back world titles alive.
Giroud became France's all-time top scorer with 52 goals, when he scored the opening goal of the match in the 44th minute to give the holders a 1-0 lead at the half-time break. In the second half, Mbappe, who assisted the Giroud goal, pumped in two stunning finishes to seal the game for France. Mbappe's 74th and 91st minute strikes gave France a comfortable 3-0 lead in the stoppage time, and Poland could manage only a consolation goal in the 99th minute when Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty kick.
