That's all from us
Thank you for following this blog. We'll be back soon for coverage of today's remaining fixtures, starting with Iraq's first World Cup match in half a century, against Norway.
France will then face the Iraqis for their second game on June 22, while Senegal take on Norway a day later.
Here's the full schedule.
Mbappé: 'I play to leave a mark on my country's history'
"I play to leave a mark on my country's history and to help my team win the World Cup," Mbappé told reporters after the match.
"I don't think we're fully up and running yet. But it's always good to start a tournament with a win. It gives you a bit more peace of mind, even though you're never really relaxed at a World Cup."
It's a little ironic that Mbappé should end up as the matchwinner, after misplacing so many simple passes in the first half. But two goals in a World Cup game are always a feat, and his second was a gem.
In other World Cup news
A Canadian federal judge has rejected Ghana's bid to get Thomas Partey into the country for the team’s first World Cup match while the midfielder awaits trial on rape charges.
The ruling means Partey, whose visa application was denied last week, will remain in the United States while his teammates face Panama in Toronto on Wednesday. He will be eligible to play in Ghana's next two matches — both in the US.
Mbappé double ignites World Cup bid
It was a sleepy start for Les Bleus, as is often the case with Deschamps' teams, but their second-half performance will have cemented their credentials as top contenders for the title.
Senegal were more than a match for France until Mbappé's opener, but are now left to rue their missed chances in the first half.
And here's our match report.
Mbappé closing in on Klose record
Mbappé has now taken his career World Cup goals tally to 14 – just two behind all-time leader Miroslav Klose.
He's also France's all-time leading scorer, beating the mark of 57 goals held by Olivier Giroud.
Full time! France 3-1 Senegal!
Senegal almost scored another in a breathless finish, but Maignan just about blocked the ball on the line.
And that's that! France were sluggish for much of the game, but when they hit their stride they were unstoppable.
And so does Mbappé, again! France 3-1 Senegal!
... but Mbappé hits back with a screamer from 30 yards out. Game over!
Mbaye scores! France 2-1 Senegal
An Mbaye belter gives Senegal hope!
Eight minutes of added time
Can Senegal pull off an extraordinary comeback?
Senegal fading away
France are looking like they could score a third.
Barcola scores France's second!
An equisite long-range pass by Rabiot is met by Barcola - who I hadn't even noticed come on - and the PSG supersub puts France 2-0 up with a crisp chip over the Senegalese keeper.
Sarr comes off
Sarr, whose first-half miss is now looking even costlier, is replaced by Mbaye.
Mendy denies Doué
Senegal, who were excellent in the first half, look to have run out of gas, with France now pushing for a second.
Mendy does welll to parry Doué's shot.
Mbappé equals Giroud's record
Mbappé is now the joint-highest scorer for France alongside Olivier Giroud.
Senegal goal disallowed
Jackson immediately equalises with a screamer that Maignan is powerless to stop, but the Senegalese forward was offside.
Mbappé scores! France 1-0 Senegal!
Suddenly, Senegal are on the ropes, and after a couple of fluffed chances the France captain finally finds the net after a brilliant Olise pass.
Olise has been the only real threat from France and it's no surprise he set up the breakthrough goal.
France denied a penalty!
Mbappé goes down in the box and the referee points for a corner, but VAR urges him to take another look.
The referee has a long think and decides to stick with his original decision.
France are fuming, and probably rightly so.
Mbappé misses!
A great chance for the France captain but Mendy saves again, sending the ball out for a corner.
Chance for Olise!
Finally a proper chance for France as Olise outmanoeuvres Senegal's defence, but his dink is deflected over the bar by Mendy.
Mbappé beaten, again
Doué's counter leads to nothing as Mbappé's latest poor touch allows a Senegalese defender to expertly rob him of the ball.
The France captain has been dreadful so far.
France come into this year's World Cup as one of the leading contenders for the trophy having reached the final in the last two editions. But their opponents Senegal served as a warning of the dangers of over-confidence, having famously stunned Les Bleus at this stage in 2002.
