France is facing a potentially enormous economic bill from the relentless heatwaves and drought that have gripped the country this summer, with the combined direct and indirect costs estimated at between €10 billion and €15 billion.
French Environment Minister Monique Barbut disclosed the estimate on Wednesday, citing calculations from the country’s national statistics agency, INSEE. She warned that the figure could rise further because the extreme weather period is not over yet.
