France reeled Monday after a weekend of nationwide unrest sparked by mass protests against the rising cost of living and in support of high school students’ demands over education funding. In the violent clashes that erupted, law enforcement officers and protesters were wounded, public buildings were set ablaze and businesses were looted, raising significant questions about the French police's approach to public order.

French and international front pages kicked off the week Monday with images of the country in flames and headlines focused on “chaos” or “disaster” after polarising mass demonstrations rocked the country over the weekend.
