France asks to exit the UK’s ‘one in, one out’ migrant deal

  • Labour's flagship "one in, one out" deal with France is reportedly set to end after efforts to extend the agreement collapsed.
  • Signed in July 2025, the scheme has led to about 1,400 small boat migrants being returned to France at an average cost of £56,000 per person.
  • France aims to replace the bilateral deal with an EU-wide arrangement to share the intake of returned migrants across Europe.
  • Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged that the arrangement had been operationally difficult to scale up to large numbers.
  • The scheme's potential closure comes as small boat crossings to the UK have dropped by 42 per cent compared to last year.
