FRANCE 24 reports from epicentre of Mpox outbreak in eastern DR Congo

EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, 3.4% of the 16,700 recorded Mpox cases have died. The government has announced a response and hopes to receive the first vaccine doses this week. But in the meantime, medical teams are tending to more and more infected people, particularly in the east of the country, the epicentre of the outbreak. Our correspondents report.

Also, Burkina Faso was subject to one of its deadliest assuaults this year over the weekend. Regional specialists suggest at least 100 people were killed by terrorists in the central Barsalogho commune, about 80 kilometres from Ouagadougou. The attack took place on Saturday, as villagers were helping security forces dig trenches to protect outposts. Fighters affiliated with the al Qaeda-linked JNIM group invaded the area, opening fire.

Finally, Sudan's eastern Red Sea state is reeling from the collapse of the Arbaat Dam on Saturday night. Dozens of people have been killed in the resulting flooding, with many more missing.
