Fox News has hired Olympic champion and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner as a paid commentator.

Ms Jenner, 72, appeared on Sean Hannity’s programme on Thursday and will offer analysis across the network’s media platforms.

The former decathlon gold medalist came out as transgender in 2015 and identifies as female.

However, she remains controversial and last year sparked fury after saying that trans girls should not compete in women’s sport.

Making her first performance on Hannity’s show on Thursday, Jenner said she was “trans but not a trans activist”.

“That’s just one part of my life. There’s so much more to me,” she added.

However, she said that she believed LGBT issues would be “very big” in the upcoming mid-term elections.

Ms Jenner ran unsuccessfully to become Governor of California last year, finishing 13th in the recall election.

She stepfather to Kim Kardashian and father to Ms Kardashian’s sisters, Kylie and Kendall Jenner. Members of the family will launch their new show Kardashian later this year - but Ms Jenner will not participate in the programme.

In a statement, Ms Jenner said she was “humbled” by the “unique opportunity” to address Fox’s audience.

Ms Jenner has previously caused controversy by speaking out against the inclusion of trans women in female sport.

In January, she claimed that “wokeness is killing women’s sports”.

Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said of Ms Jenner’s appointment: “Caitlyn’s story is an inspiration to us all. She is a trailblazer in the LGBTQ+ community and her illustrious career spans a variety of fields that will be a tremendous asset for our audience.”

Ms Jenner’s Fox colleagues also sent her a warm welcome, with pundit Tomi Lahren saying she was a “kind and wonderful human”.
