Afternoon Update: fourth NSW shark attack in 48 hours; anti-hate laws pass lower house; and a Beckham family feud

Good afternoon.

A surfer has been taken to hospital after being bitten by a shark near Port Macquarie in New South Wales’ fourth such incident in 48 hours. Two other victims remain in hospital in a critical condition.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the water in Sydney Harbour and along the coastline as brackish and murky conditions draw in sharks and the bait fish they eat. The Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive, Steven Pearce, urged people “just go to a local pool”.
