No Six-Number Match on Saturday
Powerball's top prize keeps climbing. Saturday night's drawing produced no jackpot winner, and the game's already massive prize is now projected to top $900 million by the time Monday's numbers are called.
The numbers pulled on August 8 were 5, 9, 35, 54 and 63, paired with a red Powerball of 7 and a 3x Power Play multiplier. No single ticket lined up with all six numbers, so the jackpot — estimated at $856 million heading into the draw — carries over into Monday's drawing.
Smaller Prizes Still Paid Out
Missing the jackpot didn't mean missing out entirely. Four separate tickets, purchased in Arizona, Florida, Michigan and New York, matched all five white balls and each earned $1 million. The Ohio Lottery separately reported thousands of additional winning tickets from the same drawing across that state alone.
Measuring Up Against Powerball History
Heading into Saturday's draw, officials had valued the jackpot at $856 million, placing it as the eighth-biggest prize the game has offered since it began. News outlets don't agree on what the lump-sum cash option is actually worth: one report puts it around $341.6 million, while Forbes lists a figure closer to $372 million. The gap comes down to timing and differing interest-rate assumptions each outlet's calculators used to price the annuity — the cash value is a moving estimate until ticket sales for the drawing are final. Either way, taxes take a serious bite: a mandatory 24% federal withholding alone would strip more than $80 million from the cash prize, and a winner's ultimate federal rate could climb as high as 37% depending on their income. Forbes, which has tracked the prize's climb for weeks, called it "the biggest lottery prize of the year so far."
A Trans-Atlantic Jackpot for the First Time
This is also the first jackpot cycle where players outside the United States have a stake in the outcome. Ticket sales opened to UK players on July 21, letting them compete for the same grand prize U.S. players chase — though smaller, non-jackpot prizes are still calculated and paid out separately in each country. The change brought the total number of lotteries feeding the jackpot pool to 49 and was designed to help the prize grow faster by widening the pool of contributors, without altering the $2 ticket price or the odds facing American players.
Monday's Drawing and the Road Ahead
The next drawing is set for 10:59 p.m. ET on Monday, with the jackpot now projected at $905 million. Anyone hoping to cash in faces long odds: matching all five white balls plus the red Powerball happens in roughly 1 in 292.2 million tickets. Tickets remain $2 each, with an optional $1 Power Play add-on that can multiply non-jackpot prizes. Powerball is currently sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and, as of this summer, the United Kingdom, with drawings held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night.
If Monday's drawing again produces no winner, the jackpot will roll over once more. It's already come a long way: back in May, a $20 million jackpot was split between ticket holders in Texas and Florida, and there's no telling how high this current run could climb before someone finally breaks the streak.
