‘Four sewage treatment plants in Patna to be functional by this month’

PATNA: Four sewage treatment plants (STPs) are expected to become partially operational in the city by this month, thereby offering a long-term solution to the disposal of waste liquid generated from households.

Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (BUIDCO) has initiated the process of commissioning the plants which will become functional after administrative approval from the state urban development and housing department.

The four STPs at Pahadi zone 5, Beur, Saidpur and Karmalichak will together have the capacity to treat 180 million litres of liquid waste per day.

BUIDCO managing director Dharmendra Singh said the four STPs have been constructed at the identified locations and tested successfully. “Work on construction of sewage networks and connecting them with all the households was in full swing, but we had to stop the work due to the onset of monsoon. However, since all the major areas have been covered, we have decided to partially commission the STPs so that the treated water is discharged into the river,” he said.

Singh said the Pahadi zone 5 STP, which has the capacity to treat 60 MLD of sewage, will cater to the needs of 50% households. “Beur STP (43 MLD), Saidpur (60 MLD) and Karmalichak (37 MLD) will cover the remaining areas. These STPs will start operation in full capacity by October-end,” Singh added.

BUIDCO executive officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra said around 95% physical work to lay down the sewage lines has been completed in Pahadi zone-5, Saidpur, Beur and Karmalichak. “Work on creating sewage network will be completed after monsoon. Two more STPs are proposed in Patna at Kankarbagh and Digha,” he added.

Of 104.08-km-long sewage network of Pahadi zone-5, work on laying down pipeline for 94.72-km has been completed and around 116.56-km has been covered in Saidpur, out of 117-km-long network. In Karmalichak, the physical work on construction of 90.59-km-long network has been completed out of total 96.52km.
