Six more held in connection with death of Jadavpur University student

The Kolkata Police on Wednesday arrested six more persons in connection with the death of a first-year student of Jadavpur University. Those arrested include students and former students who were present in the hostel when the first year student fell to death from the second floor of the main hostel building of the university in the early hours of August 10.

With this, the number of those arrested in connection with the incident has gone up to nine. So far five students and four alumni of the university have been arrested in the case. According to the police these six students were arrested on the basis of statement made by the three students. The six arrested were produced before a city Court who were remanded to police custody till August 28. Diaries, exercise books, mobile phone and a laptop were seized by the police, the public prosecutor told journalists.

The Kolkata Police has summoned Dean of Students Affairs Rajat Ray and Registrar Snehamanju Basu to the city police headquarters. Earlier in the day the inquiry committee set up by the university to probe the incident also held a meeting at the main administrative building of the committee. Tension prevailed at the university as several processions were held at the University.

Supporters of the Left students union and Trinamool Congress Chattra Parishad came face to face outside the main administrative building at Jadavpur University. A section of teachers of Jadavpur University also brought out a procession at the University.

The death of student has trigerred a political war of words with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blaming the ‘Marxist’ for the incident.

West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose convened an emergency meeting which will be chaired by him on Wednesday at the Raj Bhavan at 5 p.m. The Governor had visited the university and the hostel after the incident. “We have an action plan ready, it will be rolled out very soon,” the Governor had said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a team of five Trinamool Congress leaders, including Education Minister Bratya Basu, visited the residence of a deceased student in Nadia district. The Minister said that government and the parrty stands by the bereaved family and that “utter lawlessness” prevailed at Jadavpur University.
