Four in a Bed: Guests blown away by Welsh hotel's location but experience falls short of premium price tag

Guests staying at a "premium" Welsh hotel were blown away by the views from the stunning hilltop location but said their experience fell short of the high price tag. The four-star hotel faced some tough criticism on Channel 4's Four in a Bed TV show with the guests all agreeing they would expect "more for the premium price tag". Tom Bailey and Angela Smith own and run the Penrallt Country House Hotel in Cardigan, which looks over the west Wales coastline.

The owners pride themselves on offering a "higher-end product" but the critics disagreed and claimed that the hotel didn't offer value for money. But all agreed that with a view as beautiful as that there is no surprise it comes with a higher price tag. Angela and Tom told how they both have other businesses but started looking for a place they could own and run together during the pandemic when they had more time on their hands. They admitted taking on Penrallt Country House was a "heart over head" decision but are extremely proud of their hotel with spa treatments, an a la carte restaurant, and excellent chefs.

Matt Webb, who owns the Railway Hotel apartments in Glouceteshire and was running solo for this visit with his partner unable to make it, was accompanied by Ceri and Jonathan Vamplew from the Llys Aeron Gusest House in Aberaeron and Beth Cunningham and Rupi Kur who run Elm Escapes in Powys.

All five guests stayed in the main house with rooms priced at £260 a night, which includes bed and breakfast. At the end of the episode all voted that they wouldn't stay at the hotel again. The one thing they did also all concur on was the beautiful view of the coast.

Beth and Rupi, said: "I can't believe how close we are to the sea." At the end of their stay they gave Tom and Angela a 10 out of 10 for satisfaction in their hosts but gave them a five out of 10 for how satisfied they were with the facilities, commenting that the décor was outdated and the bathroom was far too small for its premium price tag.

The pair gave an even more brutal score for the food they had on their stay, giving a three out of 10. Beth said her food was "not fresh" and was "greasy". The other guests agreed that the breakfast selection was poor, lacking the variety you would expect from the premium price. Matt gave the food a seven out of 10 and said: "The level that they are aiming at needs to improve." Meanwhile, Ceri and Jonathan highlighted that the room was not quite up to scratch, with cleaning needed after finding "dust and hair", while they were also dissatisfied with the state of the curtains.

Four in a Bed airs on weeknights at 5pm on Channel 4.
