Four horses that could be genuine outsiders for the Grand National

The Grand National

(Stock ID: 2150146467)

The Grand National has a long and celebrated history of throwing up big-price winners, and with the 2026 renewal shaping up as one of the most competitive in years, there is plenty of each-way value to be found beyond the market leaders. For those looking to make a Grand National bet at a more generous price, here are four horses operating in the 25/1 to 33/1 range that deserve serious consideration.

Captain Cody — 25/1

Captain Cody makes plenty of appeal at this price. The eight-year-old has not won in four starts this campaign and was well beaten when last seen in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, but his seasonal form should not be held too harshly against him.

He famously won the Scottish Grand National at Ayr last April, beating stablemate Klarc Kent in a Willie Mullins one-two, and it is worth remembering that Mullins has proven time and again that he can have a horse ready for a specific target.

Consecutive wins in the Aintree Grand National in 2024 and 2025 underline his mastery of the prep process, and Captain Cody, carrying a very manageable 10st 10lb, could be produced in peak condition come April 11. He is a horse that knows how to win a National, and that experience should not be underestimated.

Gerri Colombe — 33/1

The age trends may be nudging against 10-year-olds in the modern Grand National, but Gerri Colombe is not a horse to dismiss lightly. He is a proven stayer who showed he retains all his ability when finishing a close second to Grangeclare West in the Bobbyjo Chase, a performance that marked him out as a live contender for the marathon trip at Aintree.

Gordon Elliott's record in the Grand National speaks for itself, three wins and a string of placed horses, and Gerri Colombe is his strongest hand this year. Elliott has a knack for having his horses at their very best in the spring, and if Gerri Colombe arrives at Aintree in the same form he showed at Fairyhouse, 33/1 looks an inviting price.

Oscars Brother — 33/1

Oscars Brother goes into the Grand National in the best form of his life. The Connor King-trained horse arrived at the Cheltenham Festival off the back of a three-race winning streak, including back-to-back Grade 2 victories at Punchestown and Navan.

JP McManus purchased him prior to that Navan win, and the new ownership connection is significant given how seriously the Irish billionaire approaches the Grand National. He has won the race twice in recent years and regularly fields a strong team at Aintree.

The caveat, of course, is that Oscars Brother is a novice, and the Grand National is one of the most demanding tests in sport. Connections have not ruled out a run, though, and at 33/1 the potential upside is considerable. If he takes to the unique challenges of Aintree, his current form would make him a fascinating contender.

Resplendent Grey — 33/1

Resplendent Grey is an intriguing British-trained option for Olly Murphy. The eight-year-old's campaign has had its ups and downs, with a poor run at Newbury sandwiched between a Listed chase victory at Carlisle on reappearance and a highly creditable second to the high-class Protektorat in the Fleur de Lys Chase at Windsor. That latest effort was an encouraging sign that he retains his ability, and he will carry a very manageable 10st 11lb at Aintree.

The jockey situation is worth monitoring. Sean Bowen has partnered Resplendent Grey in the vast majority of his starts and been on board for all of his wins under rules, but the Welsh champion is likely to take the ride on Haiti Couleurs for Rebecca Curtis, having already won the Irish and Welsh Grand Nationals this season. That could leave the door open for another top jockey to come in, and Resplendent Grey, with his stamina credentials well established, could outrun his odds considerably if he takes his chance.
