Four deadline day U-turns after Bamba Dieng's Leeds United move collapses

It wouldn't be a Leeds United deadline day without a bit of late drama would it? A late move for Marseille striker Bamba Dieng has fallen through in the final hours of the window, leaving the Whites short of options up front.

Nonetheless, Jesse Marsch's side were proactive early on in the window and have made a solid start to the campaign. An injury to Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford's recent struggles leaves Leeds short of options, despite the latter of the two set to return this weekend.

The Whites have not hidden their desire to bolster their front line, but were disappointed by Dieng's late u-turn. Andrea Radrizzani said the club had been 'screwed' by the late decision.

With that late u-turn in mind, we've taken a look at some iconic moments from deadline day that might help ease the blow.

Peter Odemwingie

There's no better place to start than Peter Odemwingie's iconic deadline day antics back in January 2013. The then West Brom striker drove to QPR ahead of a proposed move to Loftus Road, believing he was there to finalise the move.

Instead the Nigerian was left outside Loftus Road in his car and refused entry to the stadium with both clubs insisting a fee had not been agreed. Odemwingie would later claim that the move collapsed due to Junior Hoilett rejecting a move to the Hawthorns.

Speaking on Transfer Talk, Odemwingie said: "Everything seemed agreed, but actually I didn't know that one of the terms was that they [West Brom] were getting [Junior] Hoilett and [if I had known that] I would have never driven to London. Why would I have driven to London in bad weather? It was dark already, it was winter and I had just had a new born, who was one week old.

"Why would I leave my wife and my new-born kid to drive to London and wait outside? One thing I would have done [if I had known] is call my friends at QPR and say 'hey guys, can you find out whether Hoilett will actually come to West Brom or not?'

"That's what I would have done. But I didn't have to because I thought it was never a condition that he had to go the other way. I was left there waiting for the agents to tell me what's next. Then the time was ticking, I had a medical to go through, I obviously had to read the contracts and everything had to be drafted."

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney would win just about every major trophy available during his Manchester United tenure, but history could have been very different had he left the club in 2010. Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez's departures saw Rooney question the ambition of the Red Devils chiefs before informing them he would not sign a new deal.

Both Manchester City and Chelsea were linked with a move for the England international who had expressed his desire to leave. However, just two days later Rooney would sign a new deal on significantly improved terms.

It took United fans time to warm to the striker once more, but he played an influential part in winning the Red Devils a record 19th title. The perceived ransom left a bitter taste in the mouth of supporters.

Willian

The former Arsenal and Chelsea winger will be back in the Premier League this season with Fulham, which might bring back unwanted memories for Tottenham supporters. The Brazilian travelled to England for a medical with Spurs after they agreed a deal with Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013.

Willian completed a medical at Spurs before he was informed of a late bid from Chelsea. The winger would travel across London and finalise terms at Stamford Bridge, a move that enraged their rivals.

He would go on to win two Premier League titles in a seven year stint with the Blues.

Moussa Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko was once on of the most sought after talents in the Championship following Newcastle’s relegation. There were a host of top-flight clubs interested in the French international and a deadline day move to Everton looked to be on the cards.

Sissoko was set to travel to Goodison Park to finalise terms, but the midfielder had a change of heart after hearing of Tottenham's interest. The France international would turn his phone off and head to north London to complete a £30million move and pen a five-year deal.

He struggled to make an impact after his original move from Tyneside, but became an integral part of the Tottenham side that reached the Champions League final in 2019.
