It's been a horror start to the Easter long weekend after four people were killed and another person was injured in a head-on collision between two utes.

The crash happened on Friday morning near the ACT and NSW border, with, emergency crews from both jurisdictions attending the scene.

Rescue helicopters were also on the scene.

A female driver and male passenger of the first ute have been confirmed dead, as have the male driver and male passenger of the second.

The condition of the fifth person is unknown.

The crash between the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton occurred about 6.45am.

Fire and Rescue NSW said teams worked to cut people from the cars at 8:30am.

The fatal crash closed the Barton Highway in both directions just south of Murrumbateman.

Motorists were being urged to avoid the area and trucks have been told the diversion in place isn't suitable for b-doubles.
