KASHIHARA, Nara -- The raised foundation for what appears to be an antechamber has been discovered at the ruins of an Imperial palace complex in Kashihara, Nara Prefecture, which was used from the late 7th to the early 8th centuries, the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties announced Thursday.

This is the first time a raised foundation was discovered north of the ruins of the Daigokuden building at the Fujiwarakyu palace (694-710), where the emperor performed political and ceremonial rituals.
