Fortnite update quietly rolls out but likely won't fix ODM Gear building bug

A miniscule update has been released for Fortnite on consoles today, aiming to 'address stability' with a typical beefier Tuesday update set to arrive next week.

Fortnite players looking for an exciting new update to follow up the Star Wars-inspired Find the Force event – which released alongside Fortnite Update 24.30 last week – are out of luck, as Epic Games has only released a small maintenance patch to the game as this week's Fortnite update.

How small are we talking? The game launcher still lists the version as 24.30, so too small to justify not labelling it 24.31 in-game.

Epic Games hasn't gone into specifics about what the patch does, other than to 'address stability' on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Android, and Nintendo Switch. Curiously Epic didn't mention Xbox Series S in it's tweet from the @FortniteStatus Twitter account, but we assume it was just an oversight.

Fortnite update patch notes

As is typical with these smaller updates, there's no Fortnite patch notes to be seen. At least not yet. There is one large issue that some were hoping would be addressed by the small Fortnite update today, and that's the issue with the ODM Gear. Players swinging around the map "may find themselves unable to enter build mode" as acknowledged by the @FortniteStatus account in a tweet yesterday.

The account offers a workaround, which involves swinging again, or switching weapons, and promises a "proper fix in a future update." That being said, it's not listed on the Fortnite Trello Board, so either the Fortnite update today has sorted it out, or it's not been added to the list of known issues on the board yet.

PC users haven't received the Fortnite update, with some of them taking to the replies to flag texture issues which need to be fixed. It's likely the patch addressed minor bugs although we won't know exactly what until Epic decides to share more details. In the meantime, here are the listed issues expected to be fixed in the next Fortnite update, based on the Trello board:

General

  • Multiple outfits, including Bunny Brawler, Rust Lord and Elite Agent may appear shiny/glossy.
  • When using the Clone Trooper outfit, Back Blings may appear to float detached.
  • When using the Clone Trooper outfit players may notice that the head movement is more static than intended

Battle Royale and Zero Build

  • We're aware of reports that Large Rocks on the Battle Royale Island are not providing as many materials when Harvested compared before v24.20. The team is planning a fix for this in our next game update.

Mobile and cloud gaming

  • When looking through the scope of the Cobra DMR players may find the view is cut off.

Players looking for a substantial update to the game will have to wait until next Tuesday, May 16 when Fortnite Update 24.40 is set to release as the fourth major update of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2.
