Fortnite Crew: Is the monthly game subscription worth it?

Fortnite fans regularly splurge real cash on in-game outfits and emotes that they can flex in front of mates and opponents alike.

The same goes for parents of younger Fortnite players, who frequently fork out money for virtual swag.

But, is there a cheaper way to get the game’s digital goodies? Since 2020, developer Epic Games has offered a subscription called Fortnite Crew that offers several perks, from in-game currency (V-Bucks) to exclusive items.

Here’s what you need to know about the membership plan, including whether the benefits are worth the money, and how it compares to buying each item individually.

If you’re unsure about purchasing the subscription for yourself, or the Fortnite player in your life, this guide should help you make up your mind.

What is Fortnite Crew?

Fortnite’s latest season features Greek mythology-themed outfits (Epic Games)

For £10 per month, you can get a Fortnite Crew subscription via the game’s item shop or Battle Pass tab.

The main perks of becoming a member include a “Crew Pack” of exclusive items that no-one else can buy, instant access to the current Fortnite Battle Pass, and 1,000 V-Bucks every month.

There are also two bonus benefits: Legacy outfit styles, which essentially offer a new shade for an exclusive garb over the course of several months, and Rocket Pass Premium for Rocket League. The latter is a subscription to the premium tier of goodies available in the popular car footy game.

Is Fortnite Crew any good?

While we can’t put a price on the exclusive items in Fortnite Crew, we can calculate the individual cost of the other benefits.

For instance, the Fortnite Battle Pass costs 950 V-Bucks, or the equivalent of £7, which is how much a pack of 1,000 V-Bucks currently costs.

Fortnite regularly releases collaborations with movies, shows and brands like Family Guy and Star Wars (Epic Games)

With that in mind, you can add another £7 on top for the 1,000 V-Bucks you’ll get every month as a member. While Rocket Pass Premium costs the equivalent of £8 on Rocket League.

Therefore, the combined price of each individual Fortnite Crew perk, barring the exclusive items, comes to £22.

Should you buy a Fortnite Crew subscription?

If you regularly spend more than £10 a month on Fortnite, then the subscription may be worth it. Parents with kids who are constantly asking for V-Bucks could also use it as a way to set a fixed allowance for the game.

The 1,000 V-Bucks that come as standard every month, along with the 1,500 extra V-Bucks players can earn from completing the Battle Pass, should be enough spending money for most younger gamers.

Fortnite Crew also comes with a Rocket Pass Premium upgrade for Rocket League (Psyonix)

Then again, you may not want to encourage kids to spend more time on the game. It’s also worth keeping in mind that there are plenty of enticing items that aren’t available in the Battle Pass.

Fortnite is known for its collaborations, which sees the game pump out new outfits that can turn players into characters from famous shows and movies. These range from Marvel superheroes like Spider-Man to anime characters from Dragon Ball Z

Fortnite also recently introduced new game modes like Rocket Racing, Lego Fortnite, and Fortnite Festival, with even more items now available to players, most of which aren’t included in the Battle Pass.

The revolving set of goods in the Fortnite shop are priced from 500 V-Bucks to 3,000 V-Bucks. As such, the in-game coin Fortnite Crew members receive may not go very far if they want some of those limited-time items.
