- President Donald Trump has approved the execution of former army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan by firing squad for killing 13 people in Texas in 2009.
- Defence secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the execution method, with the Pentagon stating that judgment day for Hasan has finally come.
- Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 after being convicted on 45 counts of premeditated murder following his attack at the Fort Hood military base.
- The execution will be the first by the US military since 1961 and the first military firing squad carried out since World War II.
- The Trump administration recently expanded federal execution methods to include firing squads, electrocution and gas asphyxiation due to shortages of lethal injection drugs.
