Former Sunderland chief executive Charlie Methven has agreed a takeover deal at Charlton Athletic. Methven, who is part of SE7 Partners, has agreed a deal with current owner Thomas Sandgaard which is subject to English Football League approval.
The 47-year-old parted ways with the Black Cats in June 2022, after stepping down as chief executive in 2019, after a disappointing four-year tenure at the club. Methven sold the remainder of his shares to current owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori, who increased their combined shares to 81 per cent, at the time of sale.
The duo have since purchased Stewart Donald's remaining shares in Sunderland, allowing Donald to move back to former club Eastleigh. Methven, on the other hand, has been linked with a takeover at League One side Charlton over the course of the last 12 months, but has finally agreed a deal with the Addicks current owners.

The club’s CEO Peter Storrie said: “A deal has been agreed and a share purchase agreement has been signed by Thomas Sandgaard and SE7 Partners. We’ll now work with SE7 Partners and the EFL to meet the league requirements, which is a process that can take some time.
“In the meantime, the day-to-day running of the club will not be impacted. Our preparation and recruitment for the 2023/24 season is well under way.
"We have our targets for our men’s team and our women’s team. Led by Dean Holden and Karen Hills, those plans continue to progress and will not be halted while we await the approval. The aim is to put the club in the best position to achieve our targets for next season - a top-six finish for the men’s team and further progression for the women’s team.”
