The term tweener gets used a lot in the NFL. Guys who sort of float between two positions without being a perfect fit for either. Or they fit an entirely new position specific to a team. Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker took to Twitter and said he believes Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds needs to be moved to the dime linebacker position.
Dime linebacker, in the Steelers scheme, is a coverage linebacker who needs to be able to cover slot receivers and tight ends. They also have to be ready to stick their nose in the pile and stop a surprise run on a passing down.
The Steelers like to utilize three safeties in nickel as it is now with Edmunds, Damontae Kazee and Minkah Fitzpatrick so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to move Edmunds up as a dime linebacker. Edmunds is a bit light at 217 pounds to be a consistent run stuffer in the box but he’s a willing tackler.
The rub with all this is as of right now, Edmunds is a free agent. Last offseason the Steelers let Edmunds test free agency and then brought him back on a one-year contract. You have to think the market for Edmunds will be better this time around after another strong season.
Rell to the Dime backer please 🙏🏾
